By: Aragon, Alex Sandra V.;Sanchez, RenelynL.;Valdez, Amillyn P.
Reading comprehension towards Mathematics promotes better understanding. Dagandan (2012) stated that language is an essential part of learning. It serves as a means of making sense of a text, of expressing observation and judgments about it, and as a resource providing concepts and criteria to be developed in answering and studying mathematics. This study determined the Fundamental Mathematical Ability and its Relation to the Performance in Plane and Solid Geometry of 2nd Year BEED Students at PamantasanngLungsodngMuntinlupa, A.Y. 2015-2016. The descriptive-correlation method was used in this study. The descriptive correlation method is defined as a process involving the collection of data to test the hypothesis or to answer questions according to the current state of the study. Based on the results, the Level of Fundamental Mathematical Ability has a significant relationship between the Performance in Plane and Solid Geometry of the respondents. The respondents in this study were the BEED students at PamantasanngLungsodngMuntinlupa situated in Poblacion, Muntinlupa City, Academic Year 2015-2016. They were students in section 2A, 2B, 2K, and 2M. A total of 108 2nd year BEED students consist of 10 males and 98 females. The respondents in 2A with a total population of 33 students consist of 2 males and 31 females. The respondents in 2B with a total population of 35 students consist of 4 males and 31 females. The respondents in 2K with a total of 12 students consist of 1 male and 11 females. The respondents in 2M with a total of 28 students consist of 3 males and 25 females. The descriptive-correlation method was used in this study. To be able to examine the data gathered, the researchers used some statistical tools such as percentage, Pearson r, weighted mean, and t-value.Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn:With respect to the age of the respondents, it was concluded that majority of the respondents belong to the group of 17 – 19 years old with 74.07 percent since this is the standard age of 2nd year college students. In terms of gender, most of the 2nd year BEED students are females with 91 percent. In terms of socio-economic status, majority of the respondents belonged to the group of 1,000Php – 5,000Php with 30.56 percent. According to Adams (1996), low socioeconomic status has a negative effect on the academic performance of students because the basic needs of students remain unfulfilled and hence they do not perform better academically. The low socioeconomic status causes environmental deficiencies which results in low self-esteem of students (US Department of Education, 2003).In terms of the Level of Fundamental Mathematical Ability, Problem Solving, Communication, and Comprehension got the weighted mean of 3.93 with the descriptive interpretation of ‘good’. Problem Solving has a weighted mean of 3.84 with the descriptive interpretation of ‘good’, Communication has a weighted mean of 3.79 with the descriptive interpretation of ‘good’, and Comprehension has a weighted mean of 4.16 with the descriptive interpretation of ‘good’. This Level of Fundamental Mathematical Ability can influence the Performance in Plane and Solid Geometry of the respondents.
